Why???
Well - surface detail and a carved effect that you can't achieve with flamework -
If you've got a kiln you can do this - easily
Here's some pictures of
a casting from a shell with a drilled hole - just about the simplest thing we
can do. This shell is 2.5 cm across and was cast in Vetrofond using cut up rod.
We'll be adding more pictures as we get more results.
It was cast using an algenate impression from which wax positives were made, The
plaster is poured over the wax which is then melted out - so lost wax casting.
The mould was fired to prevent surface adhesion and then glass was melted into
the mould. The resulting cast has had some cold work done on it to enhance it
and a hole drilled.

We are trying out
casting the hole into the piece to save drilling but that needs a bit more work.
We are frankly amazed by all the things we can think of doing and trying to
reign ourselves in.
Then the possibilities of combining it with flame working - well - watch this
space!
