I love to teach, especially with complete beginners.
The joy of discovery on people's faces as they learn
is what really inspires me.

Paperweight course by Dawn Price

Posted on Thursday Nov 10 15:20:00 UTC 2011

Paperweights and paperweight style beads course.

I had a fab day at Tuffnell Glass studio having a lesson with  Diana East at Tuffnells.  The day started off with making buttons, with Diana showing us how to make the shanks and buttons in one piece.  We then went on to learn how to make paperweights and beads with selections of sea life looking murinni and fancy canes.  We also learnt how to make the canes and murinni.

This is my first one now I'm back at home, I will be making more of these, they really are fun to do!

                                                                       'Gismos'

Paperweight Class with Di East, Saturday 5th November 2011
£100.00
Please contact Tuffnell Glass to book

Venue-Tuffnell Glass Studios , Rudston,East Yorkshire.

Date - Saturday 5th Nov 2011.

Time - 10am -5pm

Class Level- Intermediate

8 students per class - 8 places left

We will be making 'Gismos' and learning to encase them. These can be used both in paperweights and paperweight style glass beads. Hopefully we will be able to do both in the day though maybe not quite so complex.

Gismos are just the little things made before hand to put into paperweights or paperweight style beads. They can be bits of cane or little implosion type things etc. See above a picture of a bead with a sponge cane in it and by the side of the bead is shown the 'sponge' cane and two gismos made from it ready to put into a bead, One has a yellow background and one blue. They are slightly domed and already encased in clear with a clear stringer handle to stick out of the kiln whilst warming them up ready for use - just one example.  The shell in the paperweight is another example. It is premade but not encased. The shells actually make really nice little ear studs too. Simpler gismos are the pointy bits of cane that become the crinoids in lilac and green in the bead. There's other bits of cane doing different things both in the paperweight and the bead.

Tea and coffee is provided free of charge throughout the day . There will be a 1 hour lunch break, please bring your own lunch or there is a country pub only 1 minutes walk away.

Please bring your own eye protection .All glass, tools mandrels and torches are provided , if you need a creaion station
please tell us so we can fit it to your torch before the class starts.

For these introduction classes you will have two expert tutors working in tandem
to give you the best possible introduction to this art form.

This course, apart from being a lot of fun, is designed to give you a very good professional grounding and is supplied with copious notes on all the background stuff you really need to know whether you
are interested in becoming a professional or only want to take bead making up as a hobby.

You will be able to see my collection of beads by international artists and work that I am
engaged in as well as previous work. I have a collection of books on glass beads for you to look at
and videos to sample. I like to show students the extent of possibilities available to you once you
have taken the plunge into glass making in all its inspirational glory!

Understanding how glass works under heat is really important if you want a low wastage rate
on your creations and careful explanation and illustrations of its various properties are dealt with
in an easily understandable way and contained in the notes.

Where to get everything and how to set up is all set out for you and in two days you can learn all
the basics. It's quite challenging but it's also incredibly rewarding not to say addictive.
I will show you a cheap way and a more professional way of setting up and getting started. Recommended equipment, materials and suppliers are all listed in your notes.

All equipment is provided.
Please bring your own lunch - there is a lovely deli just two minutes away
and also the Co-op.

Half a kilo of lovely coloured Venetian glass and a bound set of notes for reference are yours to
take away with you plus a share of the demonstration beads made by us and everything you make.

The studio where we will be working is part of the Old Dairy where I live which is a converted factory.
It is a pleasant situation and very easy to find near junction 21 of the M1 motor way.
There are pleasant B&Bs nearby at £35 to£40 per night.
